Original Video Programming - Internet TV Goes Mainstream

It's happening and it's premiering on the Net. Original Internet programming is coming from Netflix, Amazon, DirecTV, Discovery, Turner, MTV! and YouTube.  The web and mainstream media and entertainment are merging. We might call the new movement "Digital Hollywood!"

JC Cangilla, SVP Business Development, New Form Digital: JC Cangilla runs all business development and operations for emerging studio New Form Digital. Cangilla oversees all distribution deals, partnership development and licensing deals for the studio. Leveraging New Form’s high-profile production partners and talent, Cangilla develops customized opportunities across multiple platforms that are defining the new business model for digital video success. Prior to New Form, Cangilla ran the video licensing business for Yahoo, securing content deals with more than 75+ partners, including Saturday Night Live, Comedy Central, CBS, Discovery Networks. His experience in the digital video space has been squarely focused on business development and redefining the way deals are done. Since his dive into the digital pool with SpotRunner in 2005, Cangilla has established himself as one of the leading dealmakers in digital video. Cangilla is a graduate of Kenyon College and is based in Los Angeles, CA.

 

Jennifer Bolt, Executive Director Idea Communications, Team One: Executive Director Jennifer Bolt leads the fully integrated communications group at Team One consisting of media, experiential, national partnerships, and public relations teams. Team One is Saatchi & Saatchi's premium, luxury, and aspirational brand agency, and part of the Publicis Groupe global network. A perfect mix of strategy, media agencies and tech startups, Jennifer excels at creating change, building innovative and profitable organizations, and leading teams. The majority of Jennifer's career has been with Omnicom agencies TracyLocke and Integer, where she led the media strategy and innovation practices. Previously, she was SVP/Managing Director at Horizon Media and Chief Strategy Officer for rVue, an advertising technology startup focused on mobile and digital out-of-home. Bolt’s vast industry experience includes clients like Lexus, Pepsi, Quaker, T-Mobile, American Airlines, JC Penney, McDonald’s, MillerCoors, Harrah’s Entertainment, 7-Eleven and Yum! Brands.

 

Fernando Szew is Founding Partner and Chief Executive Officer of MarVista Entertainment, one of the world’s leading independent producers and distributors of features and family entertainment programming. Under Szew’s leadership, MVE has achieved remarkable growth through a strategy that complements its distribution slate with acquisitions across all media platforms as well as third party distribution agreements.  Under the direction of Szew, MarVista has produced more than 60 television movies and continues its expansion in production and distribution.  MVE currently has a catalog of more than 200 movies and 2000 hours of serial television and animated specials. Prior to the formation of MarVista Entertainment, Szew served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at his father’s distribution company, Whamo Entertainment, joining him in 1999 at the young age of 23.  Being an Argentina native, Szew brings a global perspective to his vision for MarVista, which led to transforming the company from a distributor of third-party produced programming to expanding into production and distribution with a worldwide presence. Szew is a member of the Zimmer Children’s Museum Board of Directors also serving as Chair Person of Development, which offers unique programs to children and youths through innovative arts and education programs, such as youTHink.  Szew is also a member of The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, a member of Young President’s Organization (YPO), and recently served a three year stint as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE). He is an alumnus of the Huntsman International Studies and Business Program’s first graduating class at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated Cum Laude with a dual-degree in International Studies and Business and a double concentration in Management and Marketing at the prestigious Wharton School of Business.

 

David Grant founded and is President of POPSUGAR Studios, the Video and TV unit of POPSUGAR Inc., the #1 independent publisher of original women’s content.  POPSUGAR Studios is the leading producer of online lifestyle video for millennial women.  It produces and distributes television, original online series, native and branded content from its studio operations in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, generating over 85M+ views monthly from its site and social media.  Recent industry recognitions include Best Sponsored Video (2015 Native Advertising Awards), Starcom Mediavest’s Global One Excellence Award and multiple recognitions as a top 3 video site by Digiday. Grant joined PopSugar when the company acquired his VC-funded video start-up, Shopflick.com in 2010. Previously, Grant had a successful and innovative career in the TV industry. He founded and was President of Fox TV Studios, which he grew into a major studio producer of thousands of hours of scripted, reality, and documentary television programming around the world.  The Studio was known for its pioneering work in groundbreaking series (including Emmy, Grammy and Peabody award winners “The Shield” for FX and “Malcolm in the Middle” for Fox), producing U.S. formats for the global market (including reality hit “Temptation Island” in 25 countries) and for the innovative “pod” operating structure that launched many successful production company startups. Earlier, David was COO of Tele-TV Media, the precursor to FIOS and U-Verse; and EVP of the FOX Television Network, where he oversaw the network’s business and content acquisition operations. He played key roles in the launch of Fox Sports, the NFL on FOX, the FX Network, BSkyB in the UK, STAR TV in Asia and Fox’s movie output deals with HBO and Showtime. David has a J.D. from UC Davis School of Law, where he served as Executive Editor of the Law Review, and a B.A. from UCLA, where he studied Political Science and English Literature.

 

Evan Bregman, Head of Original Content, Portal A:  Evan Bregman is the Head of Original Content at Portal A, an independent creative studio based in San Francisco and Los Angeles that develops, produces and distributes video built for the web.  Bregman is an award-winning producer most recently served as Executive Director of Digital Media at Electus prior to Portal A, where he oversaw creative, production and audience development for all of the Electus Digital properties. In this role, Evan was Executive Producer for nearly 100 scripted and non-scripted projects for digital and TV, including YouTube hits K-Town, Massholes, Colibritany and Isla Presidencial, Amazon kids' pilot Maker Shack Agency, and the multi-platform launch of rap battle league Total Slaughter,  \in partnership with Eminem's Shady Films. A founding member of the Electus team, Evan previously worked with Electus Founder and Chairman Ben Silverman at NBC. Prior to  that, Bregman was an independent web producer with his production team Half Day Today!, whose creations continue to receive millions of views.

 

William H. Masterson III and Dan Goodman are the Co-Founders of Believe Entertainment Group, a New York-based digital entertainment company focusing on premium entertainment experiences through direct partnership with elite talent and leading brands delivered through a variety of digital outlets such as web, mobile, VOD, social media, gaming, and more.  Believe Entertainment Group recently launched "The LeBrons," a new original, animated Web series with LeBron James and brand partners HP, Intel, Bing, Sprite, Nike and more, that premiered on YouTube and was distributed through LeBron's Facebook, Twitter, and a dedicated section of LeBronJames.com, with syndication through Digital Broadcasting Group (DBG). Mr. Masterson brings over 16 years of experience in media and interactive advertising to drive the company's sales and revenue initiatives. In 2010, Mr. Masterson and Believe Entertainment Group were recognized among The Hollywood Reporter's Top 50 Digital Power List. Prior to Believe Entertainment Group, Mr. Masterson was Executive Vice President of Digital Media for Media Rights Capital ("MRC"), an independent studio based in Los Angeles, CA. Among the digital programs Mr. Masterson and Mr. Goodman, who co-headed the digital team at MRC, led were innovative new entertainment projects including Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, a series of animated Web shorts that quickly became one of the biggest professional content efforts to date on YouTube, meinspace.com, an online effort to support Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno, as well as original short form content with the world famous improv troupe, The Second City among others. Their extensive experience in advertising and marketing has led to brand and distribution partnerships with well-known, respected brands such as AT&T, Burger King, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Nike, Priceline, Procter & Gamble and State Farm among others, as well as key distribution relationships delivering scalable audiences for their projects including YouTube, Google, Hulu, Digital Broadcasting Group, MySpace, FLO TV and more. Prior to joining MRC, Mr. Masterson held the position of Vice President of Sales at United Online and before that was the Vice President of Agency Relations and Sales for Advertising.com (an AOL/Time Warner Company), where he was responsible for overseeing agency sales, new products, strategies and a revenue of $150M+ annually. Mr. Masterson has a diversified background that also includes Vice President of Worldly Information Network, a top tier financial network, Director of Business Development for Juno Online Services, and advertising executive with Ziff Davis Corp with PC Magazine. Mr. Masterson has spoken at numerous industry events including Internet Week New York, Digital LA, DIGIDAY Video Upfront NY, OMMA West, OMMA Breakout Digital Video, iMedia Breakout, AAAA and the IAB, and is active in regional advertising associations. As an advocate of interactive advertising he has held board seats in and remains active with several industry organizations. A graduate of Hofstra University in New York, Mr. Masterson holds a BA in Psychology, with a dual minor of Marketing and Speech Arts.

 

Steve Bradbury, Principal, Vlocity Digital: Revenue Growth. Innovative Strategy.  Effective Leadership. Operational Efficiency - These are Steve Bradbury's core four: the primary areas of C-level expertise he has successfully cultivated over 20+ years at the evolving intersection of media, content and technology. All are central to his ultimate deliverable -- top line and bottom line results. Steve accomplishes this through an effective blend of digital media acumen, tactical creativity and a comprehensive network of senior executives. Steve is also a highly respected public speaker and educator. Most recently, Steve was Chief Operating Officer (while retaining Chief Revenue Officer responsibilities) of Zazoom Media Group where he oversaw all facets of revenue, strategy, multi-platform distribution, partner relations, marketing and social media. ZMG is a leading producer, custom on-demand supplier and distributor of timely, topical, viral, advertiser-friendly, short-form video content like Buzz60, Buzz60 Latino, Parenticity and Veuer. Zazoom also has produced custom, on-demand content for companies like Yahoo! (Buzz60 on Y!), Hearst Television (Vuz TV), Tribune Publishing (80Twelve) and Synacor (Don't Miss). Collectively, ZMG content has delivered in excess of 1 billion lifetime views. Earlier in his career, Steve was the VP, Content Strategy & Business Affairs for GoTV Networks, at the time the premiere U.S. mobile media network. He has also developed monetization and marketing strategies for companies such as Sony Interactive, The Improvisation, Engage Games Online and TriStar Pictures. Steve produced and moderated the first (and only) eSportsWorld conference in 2000. His corporate experience includes tenures at MGM Worldwide Television and Universal (MCA) TV. Steve writes the What If… blog and is a board member of the Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship in the Newhouse School of Communications @ Syracuse University. He has developed a variety of creative formats as a panel moderator at industry conferences  and led the Hollywood & Digital program at UCLA Extension for eight years.
